From what I've discovered to date John and Annie appear to have had a hard life. Two of their children died at an early age within one year of each other.

John was a gardener and their life seems to have been very transient, moving from house to house, and town to town (from Grantown to the outskirts of Edinburgh before settling in Leith).

Her parents were Thomas Peter Bird (a plasterer) and Annie Fraser.

I assume she was illegitimate as on the 1871 census - Annie aged 2 months living with Grandparents at No. 3 North Side (east End), Grantown. Peter Fraser (G/Father) aged 45 and Margaret Fraser (nee Grant) aged 41.

Then on the 1881 census - Annie aged 10 is living with her Uncle (Charles McBride aged 32) and Aunt (Elizabeth aged 28) in Edinburgh along with their son Edward aged 7 months on 1881 census.

I guess at some point she must have returned to Grantown and met John.
